That’s not really the issue though. The thing is the show is very obviously trying to tell us that Mako has “special” feelings for Korra and that his disproportionate worry for her reflects their very special otp status on the show. What he would or wouldn’t do if it’d been Bolin or Asami, who knows but all we see is the show shoving his “special” worry for Korra down out throats.
