Aang in the Avatar State - The Desert (2x11)
I really can’t say enough about how moving and beautiful this scene is. Aang has just lost his lifelong companion, who happens to be one of the very last remaining connections Aang has with his people. It’s really remarkable how Aang has managed to compartmentalize his grief and anger over the genocide. He had his moments but usually he remains wonderfully upbeat, but now? Now that he’s lost Appa, that’s it. Aang seems to have finally reached that breaking point where he realizes that without Appa, he really is all that’s left of the Air Nomads, and that’s what pushes him over the edge. In this scene, Aang has literally become pure rage and unadulterated power. He’s fully capable of decimating everything and everyone in a 10 mile radius. But instead of running away like the others, Katara approaches Aang in a moment when he’s completely uninhibited and destructive, knowing with absolute certainty that she’s safe with him. I mean, how pure and strong is that love? To just know that he won’t hurt you and that you can save him from this terrible pain. It says so much about Katara’s bravery and her love for Aang that she goes to him without any hint of hesitation or fear.
